CONNECTOR HOUSING

Connector Housing Injection Mold

OVERVIEW

The connector housing injection mold is engineered for producing precision thermoplastic housings for automotive electrical connectors, including sealed and unsealed connector systems, header connectors, and wire-to-board interfaces. This tooling system supports insert molding of terminals, seals, and pre-assembled contacts. The mold architecture incorporates sliding cores, collapsible cores for internal locking features, and hot runner systems with pinpoint gating to achieve precision fill in thin-wall housing sections. Steel selection includes Stavax ESR for polished cavity surfaces and H13 with PVD coating for wear-prone insert areas. Cooling employs conformal circuits with micro-channel technology to maintain dimensional stability. Ejection strategies combine ejector pins, air poppets, and a synchronized stripper system for damage-free demolding of intricate housing geometries.

PROCESS NOTES

Processing considerations

  • Mold temperature: 80–120°C for PA; 60–100°C for PBT
  • Melt temperature: 260–300°C for PA; 230–260°C for PBT
  • Insert preheat temperature: 120–180°C for terminals
  • Injection profile: slow fill to prevent insert displacement
  • Pack pressure: 50–80% of injection pressure, hold time 3–8 sec
  • Venting depth: 0.003–0.008 mm for precision housings
  • Shrinkage allowance: 0.5–1.2% for PA; 0.3–0.8% for LCP
FAQ

Common questions & solutions

01 How to prevent warpage in thin-wall connector housings? +
Optimize conformal cooling circuit design; maintain uniform mold temperature within ±1°C; reduce packing pressure to minimize internal stress; use low-shrinkage materials with glass fiber reinforcement; implement sequential valve gating for balanced fill.
02 What causes sink marks on housing surfaces? +
Increase packing pressure and extend holding time; optimize gate location for uniform pressure distribution; reduce wall thickness variations; implement ribbed structures to support thick sections; use gas assist or foam injection where applicable.
03 Solutions for terminal insertion force variation? +
Maintain terminal cavity dimensions within ±0.005 mm; control mold temperature consistency; validate terminal dimensions before insertion; use wear-resistant inserts for terminal cavities; implement automated insertion force monitoring.
04 How to achieve ±0.02 mm wall thickness tolerance? +
Use precision-ground cavity inserts with thermal compensation; maintain mold temperature within ±1°C; implement in-process dimensional monitoring; use servo-controlled injection with closed-loop pressure control; validate with CMM inspection.
05 Recommended maintenance for housing injection molds? +
Inspect terminal cavities every 40k cycles; clean gate tips and vent slots daily; replace worn inserts every 250k cycles; lubricate slide guides every 30k cycles; calibrate thermocouples quarterly; inspect cavity surfaces for wear every 100k cycles.
